More Best American Poetry Discussion

Bill Knott suggests Muldoon and Collins were picked by Lehman to edit because they wouldn't pick anti-war poems to include in the anthology.

And Check This Out

In October, Tricia is throwing a month long birthday party for Wallace Stevens.

Best American Poetry?

Jim Behrle and Seth Abramson have been taking a few shots at David Lehman and the selection process used for The Best American Poetry anthology.

Behrle has video up of Lehman and Collins.

Abramson has statistical analysis showing that poets who are married to David Lehman (or in some other way connected) are more likely to be selected for inclusion in the Best American Poetry anthology than the rest of us.

What Poetry Book Contests With a Fall Deadline Have I Missed?

Below are links to the guidelines for nine presses that are currently accepting poetry book submissions (and checks) right now. For some the deadline is at the end of September. Others the deadline is in November. My nine checks are written. My nine manila envelopes are packed, addressed, and sealed. On Monday, I'll take them to the post office.

I'm trying to build a list of publishers to send to. Copper Canyon's contest in November. Tupelo has a December 1 deadline. I have a month or so to get those envelopes stuffed.

What are the other fall/winter deadline poetry book contests? Which ones am I missing?

Poetry Walk in Petaluma

Geez, I wish we had a poetry walk in Northern Colorado. Maybe we need more poets. Or maybe we have enough. How many poets do you need for a poetry walk?

How many poems do you need to be a poet?

How far north in Colorado do you have to be to be in Northern Colorado?

Maybe I'm overthinking this.

Within the Margins

I'm taking a workshop at ColoState. We just read and discussed Truong Tran's most recent book, Within the Margins, which takes the idea of the poetry book as a series of ploughed fields and turns it into a road running from the first page to the last--more or less--from one democratic vista to the other. Tran's giving a reading at CSU Thursday night.

How else can the poem be conceived?

Is this real, or is it an ad for Katz's deli, BMW, and a couple of other things?

Emily's brother hooks her up with a private investigator in the July 11 post.

Emily discovers Steve's cheating on July 12 and vows at some point to make his life hell for fourteen days. That's about all the blog does, mention a product in every second or third post while Emily catalogs her revenge.

Whoop, never mind; a google search shows that it's been shown to be a "viral marketing" campaign:
